On September 24, Trinbagonians don't just celebrate not a date, but a powerful step in our nation's journey toward full sovereignty and self determination. 
 

🗓️ Why September 24?
On this day in 1976, the first Republican Parliament sat for the very first time officially marking the beginning of T&T as a Republic!

🔍 Quick History Check:

👑 1962- Independence from Britain 🕊️
🇬🇧 Queen Elizabeth II remained our ceremonial Head of State, represented by the Governor-General.

📜 1976- New Constitution, New Chapter
We became a Republic! The Queen was replaced by a President, and our very own Republican Constitution was adopted.

💡 What Changed?

  1. 👤 New Head of State- From Queen to President (still ceremonial, but proudly ours!)

  2. 📘 Republican Constitution- Formalised our Judiciary, Legislature & Executive

  3. 🏛️ Parliamentary System Kept- We kept our bicameral legislature (Senate + House of Reps)

  4. 🇹🇹 National Identity Strengthened- No more colonial ties; a nation shaping its own future

⚖️ Fun Fact:

We kept the Privy Council in London as our final court until 2005, when we began using the Caribbean Court of Justice for appeals.
