In a stirring tribute to resilience, cultural excellence, and humanitarian symbolism, the Rotary Club of Central Port of Spain has conferred the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) award on the legendary calypsonian and cultural ambassador, David Rudder, OCC.

 

On Thursday, February 19, 2026, during the Club’s monthly in-person meeting at the Cascadia Hotel, Mr. Rudder was awarded one of Rotary’s highest honours, which recognises individuals whose lives and service exemplify Rotary’s guiding principle of Service Above Self. The Club’s Board approved the distinction in connection with it “Poor Man’s Dinner”, held in October 2025 as a major fundraising initiative supporting Rotary International’s “End Polio Now” campaign under the World’s Greatest Meal initiative.

 

 

A survivor of polio, Mr. Rudder’s journey from adversity to artistic greatness stands as a living testament to perseverance and purpose. Over decades, he has emerged as one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most influential calypsonians, using his music as a vehicle for social commentary, national pride and unity. His voice has carried the rhythms, stories and spirit of Trinidad and Tobago onto the global stage, earning him enduring respect at home and abroad.

 

 

By honouring Mr. Rudder, the Rotary Club not only celebrates a towering cultural figure but also underscores the very real human impact of polio, a disease that Rotary and its global partners are working tirelessly to eradicate. His life story powerfully reinforces why the fight to end polio must continue until no child, anywhere, suffers from a preventable disease.

 

During the Poor Man’s Dinner programme, Mr Rudder sent written greetings expressing heartfelt words of encouragement to patrons, urging them to maintain their commitment to the global eradication effort and reminding attendees of the extraordinary impact that collective action can achieve.
