'Move me, nah!' We hardly ever think about our joints until they beckon to us through the sensation of pain or they swell up after a night of standing or dancing. Sometimes, we just notice that reaching up to wave or to style our tresses, or smooth a balding head while we think, is a bit uncomfortable. There are some things you need to know about the joints of the body. The names and types will surprise you!

Handing Over Presidency 2025 "A Handing Over from 10 to 3pm? I'm accustomed to going home at 11pm. But wait, this way I'll beat the traffic and be safe at home long before midnight!" Thus, discussions flowed and a new way, a possibly new tradition began. “It was sweet!“ smiled a Rotarian from Chaguanas, as she left with her box and new friends.PP Rabindra, Admin Chair and PP Barbara and teams were there early, filled with anticipation after all the preparations. Our guests flowed on from Rotary Clubs from all over Trinidad and Tobago: from Pointe-a-Pierre; Felicity/Charlieville; Chaguanas; Aranguez; Diego Martin; St. Augustine; Port-of-Spain; Port-of-Spain West and Maraval. |
'Some like it hot...some like it cold'![]() As was mentioned in my last article, we will be looking at the two modalities of heat and ice with regards to the treatment of pain. We often see various scenarios where the ice is applied to athletes on the sidelines especially in sporting games such as Basket Ball and sometimes on the track, but it is never clear as to the actual reasons for the ice nor the safe parameters for the application, and yes there are! Warm compresses are sometimes applied to the abdomen of young women who suffer from cramps and sometimes, and persons with arthritic joints are told to 'wrap it up' in order to keep the area at a higher temperature if they are in a cooler climate, but why. As physiotherapists, we use Laser Light Therapy and therapeutic Ultrasound to administer heat which can penetrate beneath the skin to a depth greater that topical applications of a warm pack. Let me share some information with you today as to how, when and why you should apply these very useful home remedies to ease discomfort and commence your recovery as early as possible! |

Physiotherapy Treatments![]() Therapeutic intervention in the area of Physiotherapy has evolved from the traditional hands on to Electrotherapy, dry needling and Laser. Physio’ is not just for sprains, but for recovery from injuries debilitating enough to prevent you from returning to your former way of independent life. Some Physios are trained in the management of dysfunction in respiratory system of children and adults as well. If you wish to get some insight on that, make sure to say so in the comments!

What Happens When You Walk? As a Physio with over 35yrs of experience, this is one of the most used prescriptions for rehabilitation I have ever used, ‘Just go walking!’.Of course, it would come as part of an overall plan tailored to my patients and with certain guidelines including specifics of footwear, timeframe and terrain…yes terrain. It is important to understand that walking albeit very important in the quest for healthy recovery in the presence of dysfunction, can have adverse effects and retard progress. |
Rotary and Autism Awareness The medically correct term neurodivergent awareness means recognizing and respecting the natural diversity of human brains and acknowledging that people think, learn, and behave differently, with conditions like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), down syndrome, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and dyslexia being examples of neurodivergence. Rotarians focus on service above self but how can this happen if many still do not know much about these gifted learners and how cumbersome it can be for parents to get assistance and even access therapy, schools, care, just to name a few, for them. Numerous educators themselves have not been given training to learn how to be patience with such gifted individuals. What is Neurodiversity? |
